The Author: W.D. BURNS
William Daniel Burns was born in Lakeland, Florida. His family, and those who knew him in his early years called him “Danny.” At an early age, he discovered his gift for conning people to get whatever he wanted. At the age of five, he convinced his best friend that two rusty nails and a piece of wood were from George ‘Washington’s rocking chair and they would someday be worth a whole lot more then his old shiny silver dollar.
When he was seven, his father moved the family to Baltimore, MD. It was a much tougher neighborhood. Danny learned to fight, and hustle. His parents divorced when he was twelve.
His younger sister and older brother chose to stay with his mother. Danny chose to live with his father. They returned to live in Florida, and Danny changed his name to “Bill.” His father remarried when he was thirteen. Bill quit school, and left home when he was fifteen. He married, and had two beautiful daughters by the age of seventeen – Tina Marie, and Kerri Ann. He was ill-prepared to handle the responsibility, and moved back to the mean streets of Baltimore, where he turned to crime as a means to support his family. The police made a game of that by telling him they rode around in marked cars and wore uniforms, then asked what does a criminal look like.
Bill purchased a yellow panel truck and wrote THIEF WAGON across the back and sides in big black bold letters. The game ended with Bill being sent to prison.
Released from prison, he found his wife remarried and his daughters calling another man “daddy.” Bill felt that he had nothing left to lose and devoted his life to crime!
Bill returned to federal prison twice. He furthered his education by obtaining his G.E.D., a degree in Commercial Art, and he has the equivalent of a two-year college Associates Degree. Bill has owned a number of successful businesses.
In 1988, Bill worked as an independent contractor for O’s Auto Sales in Walbridge, Ohio. In l991, while the owner vacationed in Florida, Bill was left in charge of the business. Several other guys also used the license, but they weren’t registered to buy or sell vehicles at the auctions.
On May 28, 1991 Bill left with his girlfriend on a Florida vacation, returning June 8, 1991. A fire occurred at Adrian Auto Auction May 31, 1991, and a murder occurred in Northwood, OH on June 7, 1991. When questioned in regard to the murder, Bill accounted for his whereabouts for the entire vacation.
In 1993 Bill was charged with stolen vehicles in Monroe and Adrian, Michigan.
On the advice of two attorneys Bill pled guilty. At sentencing, he told the judge there was nothing anyone could do when they are signed, sealed, and delivered. That just because he signed the titles, it did not necessarily mean the vehicles were his!
Bill served his sentence, and in 1998, he was transferred to the halfway House in Monroe, Michigan. Ten days before his release, he was charged for the arson of Adrian Auto Auction. The prosecutor contended that his motive for the arson was to destroy incriminating evidence, the titles to the stolen vehicles. Bill filed three formal motions for discovery – none were complied with! He refused plea offers of 10 years, 5 years, and 2 years with credit for six months served. Bill was convicted, and sentenced to serve LIFE. He was paroled in December of 2023, but he still maintains his innocence.
Bill is a strong supporter of prison reform. He wants to let the youth of today know that crime, drugs, and violence is not a “game.” Bill thanks God for his love, insight, and guidance as he journeys through life. For more information on him, please contact him.
